Planning to attend an ITRC Internet-based training class

Q: How does ITRC Internet-based training work?

A: ITRC delivers training courses via the Internet to reach a geographically dispersed audience of regulators, consultants, and other members of the environmental community. ITRC’s Internet-based training courses are delivered in conjunction with US EPA’s Technology Innovation and Field Services Division and use their Clu-in Internet Seminars page. The training sessions last approximately two hours, cover technical and regulatory information specific to environmental technologies and innovative approaches, and are supported by consensus-based ITRC guidance documents. Question-and-answer periods allow for participant interaction with the instructors. At the end of the presentation, participants are guided to links for related documents and other resources available online.

People are welcome to participate from their own office or a location of their choice to enjoy the convenience of ITRC Internet-based training. We encourage group participation. One person can register at a location and then invite others to participate together.   Group participation in a conference room can be a great way to generate discussion within your organization, perhaps even making the event part of a brown bag lunch.

There is no cost for you to participate, but you do need to register. Registration opens four to six weeks prior to the class. Registration is available from the ITRC Internet-based Training page or directly at the Clu-in Internet Seminars page. You may have to scroll down to find the class of interest.

You have two options when registering – phone line or streaming audio simulcast to access the audio portion of the training.   Both options provide you with a website address to access the training materials. The only difference is how you receive the audio for the training class. With the phone line, you will call into a conference call system to hear the instructors and participate in the question-and-answer periods. When you call in at the scheduled class time, we ask you to mute the phone line to help prevent background noise. With the streaming audio simulcast, you will hear the audio portion of the training through your Internet connection. Once you register, you will be provided with the details you will need to participate.

Q: Where can I learn more about the ITRC courses?

A: You can visit the ITRC Internet-based Training page to learn more. We open registration four to six weeks in advance of the class. There is no cost for you to participate but you do need to register. Registration will be available from the ITRC Internet-based Training page or directly at the Clu-in Internet Seminars page. You may have to scroll down to find the class of interest. Once you register, you will be provided with the details you will need to participate.   You can save the confirmation screen which provides class details and you will also receive an e-mail confirmation. If you are registering for an ITRC training class for the first time please add training@itrcweb.org to your address book or list of approved senders before registering. This will help ensure that you receive your registration confirmation email. If you would like, we can add you to our monthly distribution list advertising the ITRC classes. Please contact us at training@itrcweb.org to be added to this list.

Q: Who develops ITRC training materials and who are the instructors?

A: The curricula for training courses are primarily based on guidance document(s) developed by consensus-based ITRC technical teams made up of various sectors of the environmental community. ITRC technical teams develop guidance documents and training courses to meet the information needs of regulatory staff, technology vendors, and environmental consultants. These products help state environmental agencies gain valuable technical knowledge and develop consistent regulatory approaches for reviewing and approving innovative technologies and approaches. State regulators lead ITRC technical teams, which rely on broad-based participation from state and federal agencies, industry, academia, and other stakeholders in building collective knowledge and collaborative products. Training instructors are a mix of various perspectives of the original technical team – state and federal regulators, practitioners, academia, community stakeholders, and owners/operators. To learn more about ITRC, please visit the About ITRC page.

Q: What courses are being offered and when?

A: For the most current details and information for ITRC on-line training go to the ITRC Internet-based Training page. This webpage includes details on ITRC courses as well as a schedule and course brochure that you can download. Registration will open four to six weeks in advance of the class date.

You can access an archive (view slides / listen) of a previous offering at the ITRC Internet-based training archives. Courses are listed alphabetically by title. You may have to scroll down to find the course of interest. You can also access the document that serves as the basis for the training course available from the ITRC Guidance Documents page then select your topic.

Q: How much does a class and/or archived offering cost?

A: ITRC’s Internet-based training classes are sponsored by ITRC and EPA with no cost for the participant. There is no cost to participate in the ITRC on-line training whether it is a “live” training session or accessing an archive of a previously offered training session. Typically, each training course is based on a guidance document and there is a set of presentation slides including additional information in the notes pages (accessible by download). There is no cost to download the information.

For live training events you can register on-line at the Clu-in Internet Seminars page. You may need to scroll down to find the class(es) of interest. You can access the archives (view slides / listen) from a previous class by going to the ITRC Internet-based training archives. Courses are listed alphabetically by title. You may need to scroll down to find the course(s) of interest. From both the archives and the live classes you can download the presentation and associated document(s). Registration for “live” events usually opens four to six weeks in advance of the training date. Once you register you will be provided with participation details. You can save the confirmation screen which provides class details and you will also receive an e-mail confirmation. If you are registering for an ITRC training class for the first time please add training@itrcweb.org to your address book or list of approved senders before registering. This will help ensure that you receive your registration confirmation email.

More information about ITRC’s Internet-based training courses is available at the ITRC Internet-based Training page

Registering for an ITRC Internet-based training class

Q: How do I register?

A: All registrations are completed through the on-line system. To register go to the ITRC Internet-based Training page then on the class of interest then on “Click here to register” --- that will take you the registration page or go directly to the Clu-in Internet Seminars page (you may need to scroll down to find the class(es) of interest), look for the ITRC logo, and follow the registration process from there. Once you register, you will receive an e-mail confirmation with all the details you will need to participate. You can save the confirmation screen which provides class details and you will also receive an e-mail confirmation. If you are registering for an ITRC training class for the first time please add training@itrcweb.org to your address book or list of approved senders before registering. This will help ensure that you receive your registration confirmation email.

Please note that times for ITRC's training classes are listed in the Eastern Time zone. Clu-in provides a time zone conversion page.

Q: What if I go to register and all registration space is filled?

A: We encourage people at the same location to participate together. When registration is full, you can view the list of people who are already registered for the class to see if someone at your location is registered – be sure to check both the phone and simulcast lists. If there is not someone already registered at your location, you can add your name to the waiting list. When a registrant cancels, the next person on the waiting list receives the registration slot.

Q: How do I participate with a large group?

A: Only one registration is necessary for a group of people in the same location. We suggest you set-up a conference room and project the presentation slides on a screen via access through the website.

Participating with a group can be very beneficial. You can have additional discussion after the training event to help implement information learned in the class. Participating together also make it easier for participants as they do not have to register individually.   You could also use this as an opportunity for documenting continuing education by having a sign-in sheet and then distribute it after the class to attendees (depending your continuing education requirements). For more information on continuing education, please see our FAQ: Do you offer continuing education documentation or related credit?

If you are a state environmental regulator, the ITRC state Point of Contact (POC) in your state may be available to help you participate in ITRC Internet-based training classes. Contact information is available on the ITRC state Points of Contact page.

Q: The class times do not fit my schedule. Can you reschedule?

A: As a general rule we offer our training courses on: Tuesdays from 2:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. Eastern and Thursdays from 11:00 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Eastern. We attempt to accommodate as many time zones as possible to allow most people from across the U.S. to participate during normal working hours.   In addition, we have participants all over the world so they often participate at times well beyond or before their work hours.

If these times don’t work for you, you can access archives of ITRC Internet-based training courses by going to the ITRC Internet-based training archives. Archives are available to you at your convenience day and night.   Courses are listed alphabetically by title. Please note: you may need to scroll down to find the course of interest.

When you choose to view an archived course on-line, the link will take you to the course overview page. The presentation slides, including additional information in the notes pages, are available to download and print. You can access additional information including: biographies and pictures of the instructors, presentation overview, and links to additional resources. When you are ready to listen to the training, select “Go to Training.” On slide one, select the orange “sound” button. When prompted, select the appropriate media player.

You can also access the document that serves as the basis for the training course. Documents are free to download and are available from the ITRC Guidance Documents page then select your topic.

Q: When registering, there is a phone option and a simulcast option, which should I choose?

A: You are welcome to select the phone line or simulcast options. Both options provide you with a website address to access the training materials. The only difference is how you receive the audio for the training class.   Below are items to consider when making your selection:

  • In order to participate using the simulcast option, you need a sound card and speakers installed on your computer; an Internet connection for the duration of the class; and RealPlayer, RealOne Player, or Windows Media Player. The registration page provides links to download these players and lets you to check that your computer is ready to participate.

  • Some organizations (e.g., U.S. EPA) have firewalls that prevent simulcast participation. The registration page allows you to select a test clip to see if you organization allows simulcast participation.

  • Background noise from the phone participants can be disruptive to the training class. We ask phone participants to mute their phone line and avoid putting the call on hold during the training class. As the simulcast audience is not on the phone, they do not contribute background noise.

  • For the simulcast, Internet congestion at any point between Clu-in and the user can cause their audio to be interrupted resulting in the audio cutting in and out during the presentation.

  • If the volume is limited on your speaker phone, you may prefer the simulcast option. Using a computer, depending on your computer's ability, may allow you to increase the volume more than the speaker phone.

  • During question-and-answer periods, participants have the opportunity to ask questions and hear responses from the instructors. Since simulcast participants are not on the phone, they type in questions that are sent to the moderator who asks the questions aloud during the designated question-and-answer periods. Phone participants can ask their own question during the designated question-and-answer periods (and also have the option of typing in questions for the moderator to ask).

Q: Will I be provided with a registration confirmation and instructions?

A: After successfully completing the online registration process, you will see a confirmation screen which is in a printable format for your convenience. You can save the confirmation screen which provides class details. We will also send you an e-mail confirmation immediately after you register.   If you are registering for an ITRC training class for the first time please add training@itrcweb.org to your address book or list of approved senders before registering.   This will help ensure that you receive your registration confirmation email. We also send reminders a couple days prior to the training class. If you don’t receive the information or have misplaced it, please e-mail the ITRC Training Program at training@itrcweb.org or phone 402-201-2419.

Before the ITRC Internet-based Training Class

Q: Can I access the training materials and associated document(s) prior to the training?

A: Yes. Your registration confirmation includes the link to the training course website. From the website near the bottom of the page, the "Download Seminar For Future Reference" link allows you to download the presentation (including notes pages with additional detail). This presentation may be updated until one week prior to the training event. We encourage you to review the consensus-based ITRC technical and regulatory guidance documents which typically serve as the basis for ITRC training courses. The documents are available to download, at no cost, from the ITRC Guidance Documents page then select your topic.

Q: What happens if I register, but something comes up and that I can’t attend?

A: If you decide you are not able to participate after you have registered, please let us know as soon as possible. By canceling, you will open the space for someone else to attend. At the bottom of your confirmation e-mail, there is a link that allows you to cancel your registration. If you are unable to cancel from the registration confirmation, please e-mail the ITRC Training Program at training@itrcweb.org or phone 402-201-2419.

Please check back for another offering of the class. Registration for the class will open four to six weeks in advance at ITRC Internet-based Training page or directly at the Clu-in Internet Seminars page. As long as we have held the course previously, there will be an archive available at your convenience. You can access an archive (view slides / listen) of a previous offering at the ITRC Internet-based training archives. You will have to scroll down to find the course of interest. You can also access the document that serves as the basis for the training course available at the ITRC Guidance Documents page then select your topic.

During the Internet-based Training Class

Q: I can't find my registration confirmation. How can I join the class?

A: After successfully completing the online registration process you saw a confirmation screen which is in a printable format for your convenience. We also sent you an e-mail confirmation immediately after you registered. Look for an email from the ITRC Training Program ( training@itrcweb.org ). This email may have been automatically routed to your "junk mail" folder. If you cannot find the information, please e-mail the ITRC Training Program at training@itrcweb.org or phone 402-201-2419.

Q: I tried to log on for the simulcast, but do not hear anything. What is wrong?

A: The Clu-in registration provides sample clips to test your system before registering. You can choose Real Player (version G2/6 basic or higher), RealOne Player, or Windows Media Player (version 6 or higher). If you do not already have streaming audio software, you can download and install the free software before the training class. The registration page lists the options and allows you to test your computer before registering.

Your registration confirmation includes the information you need to participate. You should go to the website provided in your registration confirmation to join the training class. When you select "Go to Training," you will be prompted to provide your first and last name and the number of participants at your location. After you submit your information, the media player should automatically begin if you signed up for a simulcast port. Clu-in provides music for about 30 minutes before the training class and automatically switches over to the training class at the start time.

When participants log on, but do not hear anything, you should first check that you have joined the call at the right time. Our classes usually start at 2 PM Eastern on Tuesdays and 11 AM Eastern on Thursdays. Please check that you have joined the call at the corresponding time in your time zone. Clu-in provides a time zone conversion page.

Next, check that your computer speakers are connected and turned on. Often, both the media player software and your computer speakers include volume controls. Be sure both are turned on and at the appropriate volume levels.

You can visit the Clu-In Streaming Audio and Video Technical Assistance page to check your computer for readiness to participate in a simulcast. Limited assistance is also available as the class starts; please e-mail the ITRC Training Program at training@itrcweb.org or phone 402-201-2419.

Q; What if I hear an echo when I am listening to the simulcast?

A: An echo when using the simulcast is often the result of having more than one browser with Windows Media Player open. Close extra browser windows until the echo is gone.

Q: How do I ask questions?

A: ITRC Internet-based training classes have designated question-and-answer periods. We ask that you hold your questions until the question-and-answer periods.

The phone line audience can ask their questions out loud when the moderator asks for questions during the designated question-and-answer period.

For the simulcast audience, once you select "Go to training" and sign in, the Clu-in page displays the slides for the presentation. At the top of the screen, there is a series of orange buttons. The question mark button allows you to send in a question to the moderator. The moderator asks simulcast questions during the question-and-answer periods.

Q: What if my question is not answered during the training class?

A: The ITRC Training Program tries to include as many simulcast questions from as many different people as possible during the training class, however, we often receive more simulcast questions than can adequately be answered during the designated question-and-answer periods. After the training class, we send unanswered simulcast questions to the instructors, copying the person asking the question. In some cases before sending the question to the instructor, we may follow up with the person asking the question to get clarification or check to see if a response to a similar question answered their question.

After the Internet-based Training Class

Q: Can I get a list of registrants from the training class?

A: On the day of the training (and only that day), you can view the registrants who have logged into the training by going to the training page provided in your confirmation e-mail. Once you are at that page, you can scroll down to “Today’s Participants” to view the list. NOTE:   This list is only available the day of the training event and your name will only appear on the list after you click on “Go To Training” and completed the log-in process.
